What is techno music?

What is techno? What does techno sound like?
Alot of people these days still label anything that sounds electronic as techno. Techno is just one of several types of electronic music. There are many different genres of electronic music and each has their own subgenres, so much that it has actually become ridiculous these days. One artist begins to do something different sounding, and suddenly it becomes a named subgenre and other people try to create similar sounding tracks. This can be very confusing when you are looking for new music. But like I said in my previous post on where to find techno songs and other electronic music, just keep your ears open and you will find tracks and artists you like. Here are two links that will help you get an idea about how many different subgenres you can find and some history on how this "techno" came to be:

Guide to Electronic Music - easy to use and pretty accurate guide on alot of the different subgenres you can find, with descriptions, timelines, and example song clips to hear! MUST SEE!

wikipedia entry on Techno - this looks accurate enough to me on the origin of the word and music style

Where to find techno songs and other electronic music

How do i find these techno songs? Looking for electronic music in several places is a good way to find new music, even from artists no one has heard of before. The best rules to follow is simply use your ears, don't just go around looking for the "best and hottest techno this year", look in the usual popular places and follow links around then have a listen and keep track of what you like. Also take a look in less popular places and you may find some good stuff made by an amateur or a pro just starting up. Just listen to what they have to offer and you be the judge. You can end up with a very diverse library or music (amateurs sometimes even have free links to high quality mp3s of their tracks). Some places that people commonly look for music are:

myspace music - you can browse the charts, or search by genre, I have had better luck finding good amateur stuff on youtube

youtube.com - simply search by typing in a genre, subgenre or an artist's name, lots of amateur tracks uploaded straight by the creator too

soundcloud.com - my favorite, lots of stuff gettig uploaded on here even before thetrack is officialy completed, lots of disscussion, and ALOT OF FREE MUSIC

last.fm - good site for all types of music, can show you new artists based on stuff you already like

real life - when you hear a good tune, ask someone what it is, if you are a friend of a friend who makes music or DJs, ask for some tracks or recomendations
